15 June to 15 September

Summer in La Combe-d'Ormaz

Herds go up to the high pastures, the mountain hut opens and the market comes back to the square on Thursdays. Everything local on this page is fictitious.

Hiking trails

Five trails from an easy village loop to a full day up to the mountain hut, each with a map, height profile and GPX file. Choose a trail.

Herds and livestock guardian dogs

Large white dogs live with the herds day and night. They bark and come to check you: this is normal, their job is to deter, not to attack.

  • Let them know you are there by talking calmly, from a distance.
  • Walk around the herd, never through it.
  • If a dog comes: stop, stay calm, do not run or shout, do not touch or feed it; then move on slowly.
  • On a bike: get off and walk past. With a dog: keep it on a lead.

Mountain huts

The Pointe Grise hut (2,150 m) is staffed from 15 June to 15 September; booking is required to stay the night. The Granges shelter is unstaffed and open all year.

Fire ban

No fires, barbecues or cigarettes in or near the woods: the fire risk is high in summer. Safety advice.
