1 December to 15 April

Winter in La Combe-d'Ormaz

The village grows from 700 to about 5,000 people. The essentials for visitors, in English. Everything local on this page is fictitious.

Snow chains or winter tyres: compulsory

From 1 November to 31 March, in mountain areas listed by the prefect, cars and vans must either carry snow chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or have four winter tyres marked with the alpine symbol (three-peaked mountain with a snowflake) and M+S. This is French law (Code de la route, articles L314-1 and D314-8).

The rule applies now, until 31 March.

The rule does not apply at the moment; it starts again on 1 November.

Article D314-8 of the Code de la route (Légifrance, in French, opens in a new tab)

The pass road

In winter the Col de la Lauze pass (1,680 m) is closed at night from 7 pm to 7 am (fictitious example). Use the valley road. Never overtake a snowplough at work.

Parking

  • No parking on Route du Village, Route du Domaine and Rue de l'École in winter.
  • Elsewhere, park on the even-numbered side on even dates and the odd-numbered side on odd dates.
  • Cars that block snow clearing may be towed away at the owner's expense.
  • Car parks: P1 de la Fruitière, P2 de la salle des fêtes, du Front de neige (all free; the ski area car park is closed at night).
